At the heart of the 18th-century intellectual movement was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Writer, thinker, scientist, and statesman, he pushed the limits of art and knowledge. His complete works fill 40 volumes, including 3000 poems. His novel The Sorrows of Young Werther, written in just weeks, made him famous at 25. That story of love and inner conflict spoke to an entire generation.

This edition reflects Werther’s world: the lacquer recalls marble described in the novel, and the ring design comes from an early illustration. The blue pattern echoes wallpaper from Goethe’s Weimar home. A cloverleaf detail on the cap is inspired by a letter he wrote to Charlotte Buff, the real-life Lotte.

Goethe saw literature as a bridge between cultures. He imagined “world literature” as a global exchange. The globe-shaped cap symbolizes this idea, crowned by the Montblanc emblem.

Goethe also valued his scientific work—his studies in color, optics, anatomy, and plants. The cap’s shape recalls old lab jars, while the leaf-shaped clip nods to his botanical theory of a universal plant. His poem The Metamorphosis of Plants shows how he blended science and poetry.
