At the heart of the 18th-century intellectual movement was Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. A true polymath, he was a writer, lawyer, statesman, theatre director, naturalist, and collector. His endless curiosity drove him to explore literature, science, and philosophy, always pushing the limits of thought and creativity.
Goethe's legacy spans Faust, his lyrical poetry, and major scientific works like his Theory of Colours and botanical studies. These reflect the depth and range of his mind. As poet and public figure, Goethe left a lasting impact that still inspires today.
Supported by the Klassik Stiftung Weimar and the Goethe National Museum, Montblanc dedicates its Writers Edition Homage to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Limited Edition to this remarkable thinker, focusing on his literary achievements.
Goethe’s complete works fill 40 volumes, with around 3,000 poems. He gained fame at 25 with The Sorrows of Young Werther, written in less than four weeks. The novel, about a young man torn between emotion and duty, spoke deeply to an entire generation and brought German literature to European attention.
This Limited Edition pen draws inspiration from Werther: the marbled lacquer recalls a passage from the novel, and the ring design reflects early illustrations. The blue lacquer and pattern echo the wallpaper from Goethe’s "Juno room" in Weimar. Gold- and platinum-coated details reference interior elements from his home.
An engraved cloverleaf motif on the cap comes from a letter to Charlotte Buff, the inspiration for Lotte in Werther. The novel, a key Sturm und Drang work, was hailed as a masterpiece of world literature. Goethe envisioned “world literature” as a global artistic exchange, crossing borders of language and culture—an idea captured in the pen’s globe-shaped cap topped with the Montblanc emblem.
Goethe valued his scientific work as much as his poetry. His Theory of Colours explored both physical and psychological aspects of colour. He also studied optics, anatomy, geology, and plant morphology, collecting thousands of specimens.
The cap’s shape recalls old chemist jars, paying tribute to his scientific interests. The leaf-shaped clip refers to his idea of an archetypal plant, also expressed in his poem The Metamorphosis of Plants. The design of the pen’s barrel and nib takes inspiration from the writing tools Goethe used to record a lifetime of ideas, discoveries, and imagination.
