The Shining - A cult film transformed into a writing instrument

Montegrappa presents The Shining Limited Edition, a collector’s edition inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s legendary film, turning one of cinema’s most memorable psychological horrors into a distinctive writing instrument collection.

Inspiration

With The Shining, Stanley Kubrick changed the horror genre forever, showing that the darkest places to inhabit are actually within our minds. This edition honours a film that left a lasting mark on popular culture and opens a new Montegrappa collector series dedicated to iconic filmmakers.

Design & Materials

Made from sterling silver, vermeil, mahogany wood, and translucent red acrylic resin, the pen reflects key visual elements from the film. The cap’s finial, concealed beneath an exclusive rotating vermeil disc inspired by the door peephole cover, reveals the twin girls, who appear and disappear within a simulated sterling silver optical display as the disc is turned.

Their invitation, “Come play with us,” is engraved on the surrounding vermeil ring. Other details on the cap include the famous maze, finely engraved in vermeil, alongside an exclusive clip micro-cast in vermeil and shaped as the key to Room 237, complete with its red acrylic resin tag.

Recalling the iconic scene in which the doors of the Overlook Hotel’s elevator open and a massive torrent of blood floods the hallway, the fountain pen barrel opens to reveal the edition’s innovative filling system, the Free Drop Reservoir.

The blind cap is engraved with the phrase "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" while the 18k gold nib, offered in EF, F, M, B, and Stub 1.1 sizes, depicts Jack Torrance returning home.

Writing Experience & Collectibility

The writing experience with this edition is just as refined as the details it showcases. Both the fountain pen and rollerball are limited to 237 pieces worldwide – a reference to the room number – each presented in a special case that recreates, in miniature, the Torrance family apartment door marked with the word REDRUM, which reads MURDER when reflected in a mirror.
