Nawate Kuroginhaku: Urushi lacquer meets black silver

Sailor presents the Nawate Kuroginhaku collection, a study in traditional Japanese lacquer techniques and material precision.

Inspiration

The Nawate Kuroginhaku collection is presented in two distinct interpretations: Sei defined by a glossy finish, and Ei characterized by a refined matte surface. Both editions explore the visual depth of black through traditional craftsmanship.

Design & Materials

Each pen is finished using layers of Urushi lacquer, applied in irregular brushed strokes to create texture and depth. Over this surface, Kuroginhaku (black silver foil) is carefully scattered, resulting in a nuanced interplay of light and shadow.

The black silver foil is created through sulfurization, a natural process in which pure silver reacts with sulfur to form silver sulfide. This transformation gives the material its characteristic dark tone and subtle tonal variations.

Only 99.99% pure silver foil is used, ensuring consistency and material integrity. Each sheet develops unique variations, making every pen visually distinct.

Writing Experience

Each Nawate Kuroginhaku fountain pen is fitted with Sailor’s 21k gold nib, known for its precise and controlled writing feel. Multiple nib sizes are available, allowing for a tailored writing experience for every user.
