Cobra to Gekkou: Inspired by the Moonlight

The “Cobra to Gekkou” (Cobra in the Moonlight) is the fifth release in the Animals in the Moonlight collection. This limited edition fountain pen combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with a poetic vision of nature under the night sky.

The Story Behind the Cobra

On a moonlit night, the cobra glides silently across the earth. Its scales catch the silver light, glowing like flowing water. This quiet dance, seen only by the moon, captures both beauty and danger. The pen’s design reflects this vision, turning a fleeting moment in nature into art.

The Series: Animals in the Moonlight

“Cobra to Gekkou” belongs to the series Dobutsu to Gekkou (Animals in the Moonlight). Each model in the collection interprets a different animal under the glow of the moon, blending symbolism and tradition. The cobra, as the fifth piece, adds a sense of mystery and intensity to the sequence.

Craftsmanship by Ikki Moroike

The pen is created with the Japanese maki-e technique, a meticulous form of lacquer art. Each barrel is hand-painted by artist Ikki Moroike, who signs and numbers every piece. This personal touch makes each fountain pen unique, not only as a writing instrument but also as a collector’s item.

About Sailor

Sailor Pen Company was founded in 1911 in Hiroshima by Kyugoro Sakata. The company began by producing gold-nib fountain pens and became “Sailor Pen Co., Ltd.” in 1917. In 1948, it launched Japan’s first ballpoint pen and, in 1954, introduced the country’s first ink cartridges. Sailor kept innovating with products like the mini clip-on pen (1963), the world’s first 21-karat gold-nib fountain pen (1969), and the Fude Pen (1972). In the late 1970s, Sailor regained popularity with the “Candy” and “Chalana” series. In 1981, it released the iconic 1911 model, symbolizing decades of craftsmanship and high-quality writing instruments.
