Inside Sailor’s Urashima Tarō: A Limited Edition Masterpiece

Sail into Japanese legend with the Urashima Tarō Limited Edition a limited edition of only 50 pieces. Crafted using the traditional Maki-e technique and decorated with shimmering Raden inlays, this fountain pen brings to life the timeless tale of Urashima Tarō and his journey to the Dragon Palace. Created by master artisan Ikki Moroike, every detail reflects decades of skill and artistry.

The Legend of Urashima Tarō

The design is inspired by an ancient Japanese folktale. Urashima Tarō, a young fisherman, saves a turtle from harm. In gratitude, the turtle carries him beneath the sea to the Dragon Palace, where Princess Otohime welcomes him with music, feasts, and endless joy.

But when Tarō returns home, centuries have passed, and everything he knew is gone. The pen captures the most magical moment of the story — when Tarō rides the turtle toward the underwater palace, a symbol of fate and fleeting beauty.

Maki-e and Raden: A Masterpiece of Craftsmanship

The pen is handcrafted using Maki-e, a traditional Japanese technique where layers of lacquer and gold dust are applied to create depth and texture. Raden inlays, made from polished mother-of-pearl, reflect light like ocean waves, bringing the underwater scene to life.

Each pen is unique. The intricate details — from the turtle’s shell to the palace gates — are meticulously applied, requiring exceptional precision and months of work. This is not only a writing instrument but also a collectible art piece.

The Artist: Ikki Moroike

The pen is the work of Ikki Moroike, one of Japan’s most respected Maki-e masters. Born in Ishikawa in 1962, Moroike trained under the renowned artist Ikkou Kiyose before establishing his own studio in Kaga City.

His pieces have won multiple awards and are part of prestigious collections, including works purchased by the Imperial Household Agency. Through this limited edition, Moroike combines traditional artistry with a timeless story, making each pen a tribute to Japanese heritage.

About Sailor

Sailor Pen Company was founded in 1911 in Hiroshima by Kyugoro Sakata. The company began by producing gold-nib fountain pens and became “Sailor Pen Co., Ltd.” in 1917. In 1948, it launched Japan’s first ballpoint pen and, in 1954, introduced the country’s first ink cartridges. Sailor kept innovating with products like the mini clip-on pen (1963), the world’s first 21-karat gold-nib fountain pen (1969), and the Fude Pen (1972). In the late 1970s, Sailor regained popularity with the “Candy” and “Chalana” series. In 1981, it released the iconic 1911 model, symbolizing decades of craftsmanship and high-quality writing instruments.
